For as long as I can remember I’ve possessed an abundance of energy. Combine this with the fact that I am a notorious overachieve and you’ll have a fiercely driven, dedicated and disciplined woman. These traits have made me successful academically. Thus far I have earned a B.A. in American Studies, a Masters Degree in Education, a California State Teaching Credential in Social Sciences, a second California State Teaching Credential in Kinesiology, CLAD and I am currently working towards my Doctorate in Education.
Yes, I’m a teacher! I teach Junior High School Physical Education and I coach too!
My energy, enthusiasm and character were also applied in another direction…the gym, where I found both an outlet for my energy and a sport that allowed me to apply my work ethic. Genetically, I’m very, very slim with long lean body lines. Something I had always hated! I wanted shape, feminine curves and muscle! I found all three of these things once I learned how to apply myself in the gym.
My journey began in 1999. This year marked my first experiences in weight training and nutrition. It took about a year for me to make significant changes in my physique. But I was hooked from day one. I can still remember my very first day at the gym, I trained legs and I was so proud that I could squat the 20lb. straight bar! I also remember the first time I went to a restaurant and searched franticly for something healthy, realizing that this was only going to be achieved my learning how to modify my food. These memories make me laugh because I have come so far and learned so much since those early days.
I suppose it was only a matter of time before I discovered the sport of Fitness and Body Building. One day I happened to stumble across an issue of Oxygen Magazine and in an instant I knew this was how I wanted to look. Never before had I seen women who looked exactly like the images I had imaged for myself. I knew I wanted to be physically fit but I had never actually had a point of reference. Triumphantly I carried this magazine home and my dreams of becoming a competitor were born.
Now several years and competitions later, I often find myself reflecting back on how far I’ve come in my journey. It’s been a long road filled with highs & lows, tears of disappointment & frustration, tears of joy & triumph, a constant recreation of the self and overall it’s been an amazing progression to where I stand today.
However, none of this could have been possible if it were not for the unyielding love, support, encouragement and strength of the people who love and care about me. I want to thank them for always believing in me. To my husband, my sister, all my extended family, my wonderful circle of friends, my sponsors-VyoTech Nutritionals, my manager at FMG, and my Trainer & Nutritionist Kim Oddo, I love you guys!
